A three-run third inning was all Washburn needed as they edged North Dakota, 3-2 in the first game of the Texas A&M-Kingsville Softball Classic Saturday afternoon at Hubert Field.

North Dakota sophomore pitcher Tara Peterson allowed just three hits, but they all came in the third inning. The rest of the way she allowed just four walks and struck out 11.

A single by Dara Clouse with two on in the third scored Ashley Webb, then an error by centerfielder Terisa Syvertsen allowed a second run to score and for Clouse to advance to third. Katie Schmidt then singled to score Clouse. UND mounted a rally in the fifth with a pair of runs, but they were unable to get any more off winner Joanne Fluker. Kim Woodson-Sitler had two stolen bases in the win.
