Lady Blues win 14th straight over SBU, sweep doubleheader

BOLIVAR, Mo. - The Washburn Lady Blues improved to 29-13 and 11-3 in the MIAA with a doubleheader sweep over Southwest Baptist. The wins were the 13th and 14th in a row over the Bearcats. The Lady Blues won the opener 3-2 and took the nightcap 4-3. The Lady Blues have not lost to Southwest Baptist since a 4-3 defeat on April 21, 2001.
In the first game, the Lady Blues fell behind 1-0 after two innings, but scored one in the third and two in the fourth. The two runs in the fourth were supplied by Dani White's 11th home run of the season, which tied the single-season record, now shared by White and teammate Kala Huske. Kelly Swygert scattered nine hits and allowed one earned run picking up her 16th win of the season.
In the finale, the Lady Blues jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but SBU rallied to tie the score after five innings at 3-3. In the fourth, Brooke DeVader drove in Malarie Fellers for what would be the winning run. Erin Pierce picked up the win, her 13th of the season.
Washburn will be back in action on Thursday at Fort Hays State and then return home for a match up with Oklahoma Panhandle on Sunday at 11 a.m. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Emporia, but the game was moved to Topeka. The Lady Blues will then take on Emporia State, April 26 at Hummer Sports Park at 5 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader before facing Fort Hays for the second time in a week the following day starting at 2 p.m. The two seniors, Kala Huske and Erin Pierce will be recognized in senior day ceremonies before the home game with the Tigers on the 27th.
