HAYS, Kan. - The No. 22 ranked Washburn Lady Blues swept a non-conference doubleheader from Fort Hays State taking the first game 5-3 and then rallying to win the second game 8-6. The two teams will meet again one week from today in Topeka with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. and seniors Erin Pierce and Kala Huske will be honored.
In the opener, the Lady Blues and Tigers were knotted at 3-3 after six innings of play, but Washburn scored two in the top of the seventh as Brooke DeVader's single scored Ashley Webb. Kala Huske's single chased home Malarie Fellers and the Tigers were retired in order by Kelly Swygert in the bottom of the seventh for her 17th win of the season.
In the nightcap, Washburn rallied to win scoring four runs in the top of the seventh and pounded out a season-high 17 hits in the 8-6 win. Washburn recorded doubles by DeVader, Shannon Gosser and Dani White in the five-hit inning pushing Washburn to the win. Erin Pierce chalked up her 14th win of the season.
Washburn will be back in action against Oklahoma Panhandle on Sunday at 11 a.m. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Emporia, but the game was moved to Topeka. The Lady Blues will then take on Emporia State, April 26 at Hummer Sports Park at 5 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
