TOPEKA - The No. 22 ranked Washburn Lady Blues swept a non-conference doubleheader from Fort Hays State winning the first game 5-1 and then taking the final home game of the season 3-2. Washburn improved to 35-15 on the season with the pair of wins. Washburn will be off until they play their final MIAA doubleheader of the season at Missouri Western on May 2. The Lady Blues will not be making a scheduled tournament at Minnesota State-Mankato because of the predicted forecast. After the make up date with the Griffons, the Lady Blues will be in Kansas City May 5-6 at the MIAA Championship Tournament.
In the first game against Fort Hays State, the Lady Blues scored a pair of runs in third and fourth innings and a solo run in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead. Ashley Webb hit her seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth and Malarie Fellers was 3-for-4. Erin Pierce improved to 16-7 on the season and had her shutout bid end in the top of the seventh as the Tigers scored an unearned run.
In the second game, Mandy Tarbutton's single in the bottom of the sixth scored Lindsey Mansfield with the go-ahead run breaking a 2-2 tie. Kala Huske had an RBI single in the first inning and Dani White had a RBI double in the fourth inning. Kelly Swygert allowed one earned run while striking out six gaining her 19th win of the season. |
