SAN ANGELO, Texas -- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team opened the 2005 season with a bang as they won the Angelo State University Tournament by topping University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma 1-0 in the title game. Freshman Kelly Swygert tossed her second-straight complete-game shutout over USAO in as many days. In the championship game she held USAO to three hits after allowing only one hit in the pool play win over USAO. The winning run was driven in by Kala Huske who scored Malarie Fellers who was on third.
In their first game on Saturday, the Lady Blues topped Eastern New Mexico for the second straight day beating the Zias by a score of 7-1 to advance to the championship game.
The Lady Blues, who are now 4-0, will be off until Feb. 17-18 when they travel to the St. Cloud, Minn. tournament.

(Feb. 5) SAN ANGELO, Texas - The Washburn softball team defeated Eastern New Mexico 7-1 in bracket play Saturday morning in the Angelo State Classic. Erin Bryan got the win on the mound for the Lady Blues, while Kala Huske got her second home run of the season. Mandy Tarbutton had two triples in the game. Washburn will face University of Science & Arts (Okla.) in the championship game at 3 p.m. Stats for all games will be available later tonight at the conclusion of the tournament.
