TOPEKA, Kan. - The Washburn Lady Blues softball team improved to 9-5 after a non-conference doubleheader sweep over Pittsburg State (3-7) on Tuesday afternoon at the Washburn Softball Complex. The Lady Blues won their home opener 6-5 in 10 innings and took the night cap 9-6. Washburn will be back in action on Wednesday against Ottawa starting at 1 p.m. on the Washburn campus.
In the first game, Washburn was up 3-1 through five innings, but the Gorillas scored two unearned runs in the top of the sixth to knot the score at three. After neither team could go ahead in regulation, they moved to the international tiebreaker rules. Each team scored a single run in the eight and ninth innings. After Pitt State intentionally walked Kayla Long and Mandy Tarbutton to load the bases, freshman Jessie Batres singled down the left field line for the game-winning RBI. Danielle Hodge finished 3 for 4 with an RBI and Batres was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. Brooke Devader also drove in a pair of runs. Kelly Swygert picked up the win improving to 4-2 on the season. She gave up five runs, but none were earned dropping her ERA to 1.07.
In the nightcap, the Lady Blues chased Gorilla starter JoAnna Brozovich after scoring eight runs through three innings. The big inning was a four-run second inning with RBI singles by Mandi Daigh on a doule, Whitney Tapp's 2 RBI single and Dani White's single to left. The Gorillas would come back to score three in the top of the seventh but would get no closer that 9-6 as Lady Blues pitcher Nicole Perkuhn picked up her fourth win of the season. Tapp and Tish Williams were each 3 for 4 while Tapp finished the second game with 3 RBI. DeVader hit her fourth home run of the season while driving in three runs. Hodge added her first collegiate home run in the sixth inning.
