TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Lady Blues softball team split their MIAA-opening doubleheader with No. 22 ranked Northwest Missouri falling in the first game 12-1 in five innings while rallying to win the nightcap 6-3 to earn the split. The Lady Blues will be back in action this weekend at the Emporia State Best Western/Rodeway Inn Softball Tournament starting on Saturday.
In the first game, the Lady Blues (13-9, 1-1 MIAA) gave up four home runs including a pair by centerfielder Lindsay Stephenson as the Bearcats recorded 12 hits. Mandi Daigh and Mandy Tarbutton had singles while Ashley Webb hit her third double of the season.
In the second game, Washburn scored one in the first on MIAA hitter of the week Tish Williams’ sac fly to center. The Bearcats (6-3, 1-1 MIAA) would tie the score in the fourth, but the Lady Blues scored two in the fourth and fifth innings and another in the sixth for the 6-3 win as Northwest’s rally in the seventh fell short after scoring two runs. Dani White blasted her fifth home run of the season – a one-out, two-run shot to center. Kayla Long picked up her second win of the season improving to 2-2 while striking out three and allowing two earned runs.
