Lady Blues sweep SBU, Swygert tosses pefect game in opener

TOPEKA, Kan. - After a 10-day layoff, the Washburn Lady Blues swept Southwest Baptist in a pair of MIAA games behind a perfect game in the opener in an 8-0 win while holding off the Bearcats in the second game 3-2. Washburn improved to 17-12 on the season and 3-1 in the MIAA while SBU slips to 5-18 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Washburn will be back in action in another MIAA twin-bill as they take on Missouri Southern at 3 p.m. on Thursday at the Washburn Softball Complex.

In the opener, junior Kelly Swygert tossed Washburn's first perfect game in the 8-0, 5-inning win. Swygert needed only 53 pitches and 48 minutes to shutdown the Bearcats. She struck out three in the win. Dani White hit her seventh home run of the season in the bottom of first, a three-run shot to left, to jump start the offense. Tish Williams, the MIAA's leading hitter, was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored.

In the second game, Washburn scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings leading to the 3-2 win. SBU scored two in the fifth inning, but they were unable to plate any more runs in the loss.

Washburn scored first on Mandy Tarbutton's RBI single to center scoring Jessie Batres in the second inning. In the third, Mandi Daigh drove in Malarie Fellers from second. In the fourth, Brooke DeVader drove in Ashley Webb in what would be the winning run.

Kayla Long picked up the win with six strike outs scattering four hits allowing two earned runs. Webb, Tarbutton and DeVader each had two hits.
