Lady Blues take twinbill from Lions; Long tosses 1-hit shutout in finale

TOPEKA -- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team improved to 19-12 and 5-1 in the MIAA with a doubleheader sweep over Missouri Southern. The Lady Blues won the opener 3-2 and took the finale 3-0. The Lady Blues will be back in action this weekend at the Nebraska-Omaha Invitational.
In the opener, Washburn fell behind 2-0 after the first inning, but rallied to score two in the third and one more in the third to take the game. Tish Williams doubled to right to score Mandy Tarbutton and Dani White drove in Williams on a fielder's choice. In the fourth, Tarbutton drove in the winning run scoring Jessie Batres. Kelly Swygert squared her recod at 6-6 scattering three hits in the win.
In the second game, Washburn starting pitcher Kayla Long held the Lions hitless for six innings before allowing a basehit up the middle in the seventh picking up her fifth win of the season. She struck out five. The Lady Blues broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning as they scored three times taking advantage of a Lion field error that plated two Lady Blues following a Williams ground out that scored Batres.
