Lady Blues fall in heartbreakers to UCM

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The Washburn Lady Blues lost a pair of
heartbreakers as the were swept in a doubleheader with Central
Missouri falling in the first game 4-3 in 11 innings and dropping the
nightcap 8-7 as the Jennies scored five runs in the bottom of the
seventh in the second game to complete the sweep. With the losses,
Washburn falls to 24-17 overall and 8-6 in the MIAA. The Lady Blues
will continue their road trip as they will have another doubleheader
at Truman State in Kirksville, Mo., on Saturday starting at noon.
In the first game, the Jennies won 4-3 in 11 innings. Each team scored
no more than one run in any inning as Central Missouri scored solo
runs in the second, sixth, eighth and the winner in the 11th inning.
The Lady Blues stranded 13 in the game as Tish Williams and Dani White
each had two hits for the Lady Blues.
Washburn scored their first run in the fourth inning as Mandi Daigh
singled with two outs and was sent home by White’s triple. Washburn
took the lead in the fifth inning as Malarie Fellers scored on a wild
pitch. Central Missouri tied the score in the sixth inning. The Lady
Blues took the lead back on Mandy Tarbutton’s home run to right
center. Washburn left five runners on base in the final four innings,
including two at third base.
Swygert pitched the entire game for the Lady Blues picking up the hard-
luck loss.
In the second game, Washburn jumped out to a 2-0 lead after scoring a
pair in the top of the second as Brooke DeVader led off the inning
with a home run to center. The Lady Blues picked up another as
Williams hit a double to left scoring Daigh.
The Jennies came back to take the lead in the bottom of the third
scoring three runs. Neither team scored in the fourth inning, but the
Lady Blues took the lead for good after adding three in the top of the
fifth inning. Williams hit her 11th home run of the season, after
hitting three in yesterday’s second game against Park, to begin the
stanza. After Ashley Webb singled to left and stole second base, Dani
White put the Lady Blues in front with a two-run homer to center
putting the Lady Blues up 5-3. Washburn would go on to add two more in
the seventh inning as Daigh doubled to right chasing home Tarbutton
and White giving Washburn a 7-3 lead entering the bottom of the
seventh inning. However, the Jennies scored five runs on three hits
aided by two Lady Blues’ errors as they rallied for the 8-7 win.
