Lady Blues sweep Bulldogs, Williams break WU record for single season home runs

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Washburn swept Truman State and freshman Tish Williams broke the Lady Blues’ single season record for home runs as she hit one in each game lifting her total to 13. Washburn won the first game 4-3 and took the second game 7-3. The Lady Blues will be back in action on Tuesday at the Washburn Softball Complex with a doubleheader against Missouri Western. Washburn is now 26-17 overall and 10-6 in the MIAA.

In the opener, the Lady Blues fell behind 2-0 as the Bulldogs scored on back to back home runs. Washburn tied the score with Williams’ first home run of the day scoring Jessie Batres who singled in the inning.

In the fourth, Truman scored an unearned run in the fourth to take the 3-2 lead. Washburn took the lead for good in the sixth inning as Brooke DeVader scored on a past ball and Whitney Tapp scored on a Danielle Hodge single pushing the Lady Blues to the 4-3 win.

Kelly Swygert improved to 9-9 on the season allowing two earned runs scattering six hits retiring nine of the last ten Truman batters.

In the second game, Williams led off the game with her record-breaking home run to center. The Lady Blues added two more in the third. Williams walked and scored on Ashley Webb’s fifth home run of the season. Truman cut the lead to 3-2 after scoring two in the bottom of the third.

In the sixth inning, Williams hit connected on a 2 RBI single scoring Tapp, who pinch-ran for Mandi Daigh, who singled and Batres who reached on a fielder’s choice. The Lady Blues added two more in the seventh as Webb singled and Dani White recorded back to back singles and was driven home by Brooke DeVader’s double. The Bulldogs added one in the seventh to cut the final score to 7-3.

Kayla Long picked up the win improving to 8-3 on the season.

For the six games for the week, Washburn’s Williams hit .714 going 15 for 21 with 16 RBI, 7 runs scored and 6 home runs adding to a 1.619 slugging percentage. Williams drove in 16 of the Lady Blues’ 37 runs this week and had 34 of the 103 total bases.
