Lady Blues split doubleheader with Missouri Western

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Lady Blues split a doubleheader with Missouri Western winning the first game 1-0 and falling in a shortened second game by the same score. The Lady Blues fall to 27-18 overall and finish the MIAA slate with an 11-7 record. The Lady Blues will not know their seed for this weekend’s conference tournament in Kansas City until the doubleheader between Missouri Western and Emporia State is completed tomorrow.
In the first game, Washburn picked up their only run of the game after a 1 hour and 39 minute delay for lightning in the third inning. Washburn’s Tish Williams walked and was moved over on a sac bunt by Malarie Fellers. Ashley Webb reached on a throwing error by the third baseman loading the bases. Mandy Tarbutton drove in Williams with a sac fly to left.
Kelly Swygert picked up the win allowing only a fifth inning hit by the Griffons.
The first game lasted 3 hours and 59 minutes. Prior to the 99 minute lightning delay in the fourth inning, there was a 61 minute delay in the bottom of the second after tornado sirens went off in Topeka.
The second game started at 6:55 p.m. and was called after five innings of play because of darkness. The Griffons scored their lone run in the top of the first. The Lady Blues managed only three hits while Swygert held the Griffons to five.
The Lady Blues left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning.
