Lady Blues advance to Championship Bracket play with 2 wins in Texas

AMARILLO, Texas -- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team advanced to the Championship Bracket of the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs Classic after picking up a pair of wins on Friday. They topped Oklahoma Panhandle State 5-0 and came from behind to top Southeastern Oklahoma State 4-3.
In the first game against OPSU, the Lady Blues' Nicole Perkuhn squared off against her cousin and Topeka native Rachel Hughes and tossed her first complete game shutout of her career as she struck out seven while scattering three hits. The Lady Blues scored three runs in the sixth as Malarie Fellers, Mandy Tarbutton and Tish Williams each singled.
In the second game against Southeastern Oklahoma, the Lady Blues scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally for the 4-3 win. In the seventh, Danielle Hodge doubled and moved to third on a sac bunt. Fellers reached on a fielding error scoring Megan Kimerer. Mandy Tarbutton drove in the winning run on a triple chasing Fellers home for the come-from-behind win.
Kelly Swygert picked up the win on the mound allowing two earned runs.
The Lady Blues will take on Northeastern Oklahoma at 11 a.m. in the gold bracket semifinals on Saturday morning and take on either Oklahoma City or Eastern New Mexico at 3 p.m. in the finals/third place game. The Lady Blues will stick around one more day and take on West Texas A&M in a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
