Lady Blues sweep Pitt State in nonconference doubleheader

EDMOND, Okla. – The Washburn Lady Blues softball team went 3-3 this weekend at the Central Oklahoma Invitiational.
In the first game, the Lady Blues fell 5-4 to No. 9 Central Oklahoma after the Bronchos scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Brooke DeVader and Whitney Tapp each collected two hits and DeVader drove in a pair of runs hitting a two-run homer in the third inning.
In the second game of the weekend, the Lady Blues gave up six unearned runs in the top of the seventh as Midwestern State got by Washburn 10-9. The Lady Blues jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings as Washburn scored four in the bottom of the first as Ashley Webb smashed a three-run homer. Webb homered again in the sixth inning with a two-run shot to put Washburn up 8-4. However Washburn wouldn’t keep the lead as the Mustangs scored six to take a 10-8 lead. The Lady Blues added one in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough.
On Saturday, Washburn blasted Southwestern Oklahoma 14-2 behind 15 hits as Kayla Long picked up her first win at Washburn after scattering four hits. Tish Williams and Dani White each had three hits and Dani White snapped a school record with seven RBI after hitting two home runs.
The Lady Blues wrapped up the event on Sunday with two wins topping Northeastern State 4-0 and splitting a pair of games with Central Oklahoma winning 6-4 then falling 10-0.
Against Northeastern, Nicole Perkhuhn improved to 3-0 with the complete game shutout while striking out six. Webb and Williams each homered for the Lady Blues driving in a pair of runs.
In the first game of the day against UCO, Kelly Swygert picked up the win allowing three earned runs while Williams hit another home run and Brooke DeVader added one as well.
To wrap up the tournament, Washburn managed only three hits against UCO falling in five innings.
For the three-day event, the Lady Blues were 3-3 with Brooke DeVader batting .500 collecting nine hits in 18 at bats driving in six. Webb hit four home runs while driving in eight.
