Blues land 2 first team all-MIAA selections

The Washburn Lady Blues received two first team selections
as voted on by the conferences coaches. Both senior first basemen
Stacie Carpenter and junior right fielder Kristen Cheney were picked
to the leagues top team. Sophomore Brooke Lyons was named second
team and senior outfielder Amy Scott and sophomore catcher Julie Blaufuss
received honorable mention accolades.
Stacie Carpenter, from Clay Center, Kan., finishes her
four-year career playing in 199 games starting all but two. Carpenters
56 doubles is tops on the all-time list at Washburn. Her 190 hits ranks
her fifth on the all-time hit list. She is also third in RBI with 127,
fourth in runs scored with 100 and fifth in batting average with a .337
mark. She is also second in career putouts with 1226.
This season, Carpenter recorded a .370 batting average
leading the Lady Blues in with 14 doubles and 37 RBI. She also led the
team in slugging percentage with a .610 clip.
Carpenter was a first team all-MIAA choice as a junior and she also
received second team all-region honors as well. As a sophomore, she
was an honorable mention all-conference pick.
Kristen Cheney, from Wichita, was second on the team with
a .391 batting average. She led the Lady Blues with 63 base hits, tying
for fifth on the single season charts. She will carry a 19-game hitting
streak into her senior season. Cheney led the team with 15 stolen bases
in 16 attempts. She also recorded eight doubles, four home runs and
two triples.
Her 41 runs scored led the Lady Blues and was the sixth-highest
single season mark in school history. The .391 batting average was the
tenth-highest in school history. Cheney tied a school record by driving
in five runs against Newman on April 29.
The lone representative for the Lady Blues on the second
team was Brooke Lyons. The Topeka native led the Lady Blues with a .393
batting average collecting 48 hits. Her four triples led the team. Her
batting average was the ninth-highest in school history.
On the honorable mention team was Topekan Amy Scott as
an outfielder. Scott led the Lady Blues outfielders with six assists.
She started all 49 games this season for the Lady Blues. She recorded
36 hits and scored 19 runs.
Joining Scott was Julie Blaufuss. Blaufuss is from Lenexa,
Kan., and was fourth on the team with a .344 batting averaged. Blaufuss
was third on the team with 53 hits and second with nine doubles. Behind
the plate, Blaufuss threw out eight of 24 would-be basestealers. This
season, Blaufuss broke the school record for most hits in a game with
five on March 31 against Augustana.
