Lady Blues go 2-0 in 2001 opening weekend

The Washburn Lady Blues opened the 2001 season winning two games at the Central Arkansas Tournament in Conway, Ark.

The Lady Blues topped MIAA rival Southwest Baptist in the opener winning 5-1. Freshman Holly Reichel pitched five innings striking out three in her WU debut. Amy Heiman came in to pick up the save pitching two innings. Dawn Nachbar was 3 for 3 with 3 RBI and a home run.

In game two against Henderson State, the Lady Blues scored nine runs en route to a 9-6 win over the Lady Reddies.

Heiman went the distance striking out six giving up two earned runs. Stacie Carpenter was 2 for 3 with a three-run homer in the sixth that put the Lady Blues up for good. Katie Schmidt added a home run of her own and drove in two runs.

The Lady Blues are scheduled to play Kansas on Wednesday, weather permitting at 3 p.m. on the Washburn softball fields.
