Lady Blues open 3-1 in 2002 debut

CONWAY, ARK - The Washburn Lady Blues sofbtall team opened their 2002 season going 3-1 at the Central Arkansas Tournament over the weekend.

In game one, the Lady Blues' Ashley Smith tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout in her college win. She struck on nine in her Washburn debut and Julie Blaufuss went deep for her first home run of the season in the 4-0 win.

In the second game, the Lady Blues exploded over Howard-Payne University for a 13-0 win. Katie Gregg picked up her first collegiate win in the complete game shutout allowing two hits and striking out seven. Dara Clouse and Keri Tanner hit back to back home runs in the first inning propelling the Lady Blues to the win.

Against Southern Arkansas in game No. 3, the Lady Blues rolled into the Championship Bracket with a 6-1 win. Lady Blues sophomore Holly Reichel struck out eight allowing two hits and walking only one. Molly Gleisberg was 2 for 4 with 1 RBI and she also scored two runs. Julie Blaufuss was 1 for 3 with 2 RBI and Tanner was 2 for 2 with an RBI.

On Saturday, the Lady Blues came up short to defending MIAA Champions Missouri Southern. The Lady Lions pulled out a 1-0 win scoring the winning run on a passed ball in the third inning. Tanner and Dawn Nachbar picked up the only hits for the Lady Blues. Also in the game, Kristen Cheney's 22-game hitting streak came to an end dating back to last season.

The Lady Blues will travel to Irving, Texas for the NFCA/Lead-off Classic from March 1 to 3.
