TOPEKA -The Washburn Lady Blues used another pair of outstanding
pitching performances in a doubleheader sweep over Central Methodist
College (Mo.) winning the first game 2-0 and taking the second 1-0.
The win lifted the Lady Blues to 39-8 and the win in the second game
gave Washburn head coach Kim Newbern her 200th at the helm of the Lady
Blues. The win also tied Newbern with former head coach Kelly Osburn
for the most wins as a Lady Blues head coach.
In the first game, Katie Gregg improved to 15-2 picking
up her 14th complete game of the season and her ninth shutout striking
out five Eagles' batters. Dara Clouse would drive in the only two runs
for the Lady Blues. Kristen Cheney would go 2-3 scoring both of the
runs for Washburn.
In the nightcap, Ashley Perkins outdueled the Eagles'
Amy Pottebaum for the complete game shutout victory lifting her record
to 15-3 and lowering her ERA to 1.04. Perkins allowed only two hits
compared to Pottebaum's three hits. The lone Lady Blue run would come
in the bottom of the sixth when Holly Reichel would drive in Jackie
Horn who was inserted as a pinch runner for Dara Clouse who singled
with one out.
The Lady Blues' pitching staff has held opposing batters
scoreless for 29 straight innings lowering its team ERA to 1.23.
The Lady Blues will be back in action on Wednesday when
they travel to St. Joseph, Mo. to take on Missouri Western in a MIAA
battle.
