Lady Blues blank Blue Tigers for 2nd time in five days

TOPEKA - Using a massive hitting attack the Lady Blues assaulted the Washburn record books and Blue Tiger pitching staff while WU's freshman young gun pitchers kept Lincoln in check tossing their second doubleheader shutout over Lincoln in the past five days. The Lady Blues won the first game 9-0 in five innings and won the second 5-0 to sweep the season series 4-0 with the Blue Tigers, while improving to 15-0 against Lincoln in the all-time series.

In the first game, the Lady Blues crushed three home runs raising their season total to 38 breaking the MIAA single-season home run record of 37 set by Truman State during the 2000 season. The Lady Blues would up its total to 40 by the end of the second game. Keri Tanner finished the first game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a three-run home run going 2-3 with five RBI and breaking the Washburn freshman record with her seventh home run of the season. Katie Schmidt hit her fourth home run of the season and Molly Gleisberg added her second as well. Freshman pitcher Katie Gregg improved her record to 14-2 with her team-high eighth complete-game shutout and 13th complete game overall. Gregg struck out eight Blue Tigers and walked no one, scattering six hits.

In the second game, Brooke Lyons hit the first of her two home runs in the game in the first inning and the second one coming in the third. Lyons became the 12th Lady Blue to hit two home runs in a single game. She finished the game 3-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Her home run in the first inning pushed the Lady Blues over Washburn's single-season RBI mark - they now have 234 this season breaking the old record of 229 set in 1995. The Lady Blues would lead 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth, but the Lady Blues would score three in the bottom of the inning. Ashley Perkins improved to 14-3 and lowered her ERA to 1.11 striking out a season-high 10 batters scattering three hits. Perkins held the Blue Tigers hitless through 4 and 2/3 innings before Sara Koch would break up the no-no with a dribbler to second base.

The Lady Blues will be back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. as they take on Central Methodist College (Mo.) at the Washburn Softball Complex. The Lady Blues will play its next MIAA game on April 17 when they take on Missouri Western in St. Joseph starting at 5 p.m.
