JOPLIN, MO - The Washburn Lady Blues improved to 35-8
and 9-1 in the MIAA with a doubleheader sweep over the Missouri Southern
State College Lady Lions. The Lady Blues won the first game 3-1 and
took the nightcap 9-2. The sweep over the Lady Lions was the first time
MSSC had been swept in a doubleheader at home at Gene Wild Field.
In the first game, the Lady Blues scored all three runs
in the third inning. Dara Clouse walked with the bases loaded to force
in Molly Gleisberg to plate the first run for Washburn. The inning was
capped as Katie Schmidt lined a two-out double into left field plating
Brooke Lyons and Kristen Cheney. Katie Gregg upped her record to 13-2
scattering six hits and striking out two for the win allowing the one
earned run.
In the nightcap, the Lady Blues opened the flood gates
and pounded Lady Lions pitching for 11 hits scoring nine runs. Lyons
was 3-4 in the game lacking only a single from hitting for the cycle
driving in three runs and scoring twice. Dawn Nachbar was 2-4 and scored
two runs. Crystal Wittlinger and Molly Gleisberg each drove in a pair
of runs. Seven of the Lady Blues hits were for extra bases. Schmidt
also homered for the Lady Blues. Ashley Perkins improved to 13-3 with
the win. Gregg relieved Perkins in the sixth inning and struck out three
in two innings.
The Lady Blues will be back in action on Friday when they
take on Lincoln in a doubleheader at the Washburn Softball Complex at
1 p.m.
