TOPEKA - The Washburn Lady Blues
opened their MIAA season with a doubleheader sweep over Northwest Missouri
State at the Washburn Softball Complex. The Lady Blues won the first
game 4-1 and took the second game 2-1.
Kristen Cheney continued her hot hitting for the Lady
Blues going 1 for 3 with an RBI and scoring two runs. Julie Blaufuss
hit her sixth double of the season while driving in two runs. The Lady
Blues used Katie Gregg's wonderful pitching performance for the win.
The freshman picked up the complete-game win striking out five and walking
no one while scattering six hits allowing the one earned run.
In the second game, the Lady Blues trailed 1-0 after Northwest
Missouri had hit in the third inning, but rallied to score two runs
in the bottom of the inning for the win. Both of the Lady Blues' runs
came in the third. Molly Gleisberg, who went 2-3 in the game, scored
Washburn's first run after Cheney singled her in. Cheney would score
later in the inning on Dara Clouse's fielder's choice. Holly Reichel
improved her record to 9-3 with the win. Reichel allowed the one earned
run in the complete-game victory.
The Lady Blues will now travel to the Nebraska-Omaha Invitational
where they will meet No. 1 ranked, and host school UNO to start the
event. The Lady Blues will then take on Nebraska-Kearney and finish
Saturday's play with MIAA rival Pittsburg State. On Saturday, the Lady
Blues will take on a trio of MIAA schools in out of conference competition
in Emporia State, Northwest Missouri and then Central Missouri. The
Lady Blues will return to action at the Washburn Softball Complex on
April 2, when they take on Pittsburg State.
