Lady Blues smash five homers in sweep over Pittsburg State

TOPEKA - The Washburn Lady Blues used the long ball cranking out five home runs in a doubleheader sweep over Pittsburg State winning the first game 11-0 and taking the nightcap 5-0. The win improved the Lady Blues to 28-6 and 4-0 in the MIAA. The start is the second best start in school history after 34 games as the 1986 squad started the season 32-2 en route to a 50-12 season and a berth in the NAIA National Tournament.

In the first game, Kristen Cheney led off the game with the first of her two home runs in the game, four batters later, Keri Tanner smashed a three-run shot. In all, the Lady Blues struck four home runs in the game tying a school record. Cheney became the 11th Lady Blue to hit two home runs in a single game. She would finish the game 2-3 with 2 RBI and two runs scored. Tanner would lead the Lady Blue RBI-tally driving in four runs going 2-3 as well. Brooke Lyons hit her third home run of the season and her third double scoring three runs. Katie Gregg improved her record to 9-1 on the season striking out six Gorillas and walking none.

In the second game, the Lady Blues led only 2-0 after three innings but added three in the bottom of the sixth for the 5-0 win. Ashley Perkins picked up her team-leading 10th win on the season with two losses pitching the complete-game striking out four. Dara Clouse hit her fourth home run of the season and her seventh double scoring the Lady Blues' first two runs. Cheney was 1-4 with 2 RBI.

The Lady Blues will travel to Lawrence tomorrow to take on the Kansas Jayhawks in a single seven inning game starting at 4 p.m.
