Lady Blues split with South Dakota State

TOPEKA - The Washburn Lady Blues split a doubleheader with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits falling in the first game 3-1 and coming back to win the nightcap 1-0.

In the first game, the Lady Blues could not get the big hit they needed as they stranded 10 baserunners and seven of those were in scoring position. The Jackrabbits' Jill Hlavacek drove in two runs including smashing a solo home run in sixth. Melissa Alleven pitches complete game striking out seven scattering six hits.

In game two, the Lady Blues collected only three hits, all of those by senior Kristen Cheney's whose third hit, a solo opposite field home run in the bottom of the sixth gave the Lady Blues their only run. Ashley Perkins pictched a complete-game three-hit shutout striking out seven.

The Lady Blues will be back in action tomorrow morning in the Big Blue Classic starting at 9:30 a.m. against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.
