Lady
Blues sweep MIAA Player of the Week Honors
April 16, 2002
The Washburn Lady Blues wrapped up a 6-0 week and sweeping the MIAA
Player of the Week honors in the process with Brooke Lyons being named
Hitter of the Week and Katie Gregg taking MIAA Pitcher of the Week.
Lyons hit .444 (8 of 18) with three home runs and six
runs batted in. In a doubleheader sweep over Missouri Southern, Lyons
was 4 for 8 in the Lady Blues first ever sweep over Missouri Southern
and the Lions first doubleheader sweep at Gene Wild Field. After going
1 for 4 in the first game with a run scored, she lacked only a single
from hitting for the cycle going 3 for 4 with a double, triple and home
run to go with a stolen base and two runs scored. After going 0 for
2 with a walk in the first game of a doubleheader sweep over Lincoln
on Friday, Lyons became the 12th Lady Blue to hit two home runs in one
game in the night cap. She finished that game 3 for 3 with a sacrifice
and three RBI. She finished the week going 1 for 5 with a sacrifice
and a stolen base in a sweep over Central Methodist. For the week, Lyons
batted 4 for 7 with runners in scoring position and was 4 for 6 driving
in five runs with two outs.
Gregg finished the week 3-0 with a 0.33 ERA in four appearances
for the Lady Blues. She tossed a complete-game six hitter in game one
of a doubleheader against Missouri Southern allowing one run and striking
out two. She also pitched two innings of scoreless relief against the
Lions allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts. Against Lincoln,
she logged a five-inning complete-game shutout scattering six hits with
eight strikeouts and no walks. On Sunday against Central Methodist she
struck out five and allowed only two hits. The back-to-back shutouts
give Gregg nine for the season and three complete games run her season
total to 14. She has not allowed a run in the past 18 innings pitched
and has allowed only one run in her last 42 innings pitched (a 0.17
ERA).
