JOPLIN, Mo. - The No. 17 Washburn Lady Blues topped Missouri Southern 32-30, 30-28, 30-28 at Young Gym Wednesday night. The Lady Blues improved to 15-1 and 3-1 in the MIAA.
Despite hitting just .200 the Lady Blues won the opening game after being tied at 30. Katie Brandt and Anna Byers finished the game with back-to-back kills.
The Lady Blues hit .245 to win game two and had their best hitting performance in game three. Down 28-27 in the third game, Washburn used a kill from Anna Byers to tie it and two MSSU errors to seal the victory.
Dani McHenry led Washburn with 15 kills, while Brandt and Emily Foster added 12 and 11 kills respectively. Foster and Wendy Kobbeman each had 16 digs, while setter Ashley Smith had 41 assists. Smith is setting in place of starter Julie Sackman, who sat out the match with an injury.
Washburn is back in action 7 p.m. Friday night in Lee Arena against Southwest Baptist. The Lady Blues also host No. 18 Pittsburg State 1 p.m. Saturday.
