TOPEKA - The No. 15 Washburn volleyball team defeated Northwest Missouri State 30-25, 30-27, 30-20 in Lee Arena Friday night.

The squads were tied at 24 in the opening game, before the Lady Blues took control with five straight points. Two kills and an ace by Emily Foster set up Katie Brandt's game-winning kill.

The Lady Blues held off Northwest in the second game before going on a big run in game three with the score 21-20. Washburn scored nine straight points to take the match, including two kills by Dani McHenry and Mandi Cox's game-winning kill.

Cox, making her first start in Lee Arena, finished with eight kills in 15 attempts with no errors and five blocks. Foster led Washburn with 14 kills, while McHenry added 10 kills. Brandt added nine kills and a team-high seven blocks, while Wendy Kobbeman had 24 digs.

Steph Suntken led Northwest with 10 kills, while Heston Mackenzie and Allison Hyland added nine kills apiece.

Washburn improved to 21-3 and 8-2 in the MIAA heading into Saturday's showdown with No. 3 Truman State. Truman is 24-0 and 10-0 in the MIAA.
