TOPEKA - The No. 15 Washburn volleyball team fell 30-27, 30-28, 33-31 to No. 3 Truman State Saturday night. The loss was Washburn's first in eight matches at home this season.
The Lady Blues led by as many as four points early in the first game, before Truman rallied back. Kelsey Wackerman's kill gave Truman a 19-15 lead and capped an 8-0 run by the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs finished with a .327 hitting percentage, compared to .151 for WU to seal the win.
Washburn led 20-15 in game two before Truman made another run to take the lead 21-20 on back-to-back kills by Tiffany Graham. Another kill by Graham made it 29-28, before a WU error ended the game.
The Lady Blues gained another big lead 14-7 in game three on Emily Foster's kill. The Bulldogs rallied again and took their first lead in the game since early on with a WU error to make it 22-21. WU rallied to tie it at 30 on Foster's kill before Truman used kills by Graham and Sarah Shearman to win the match.
Foster had a team-high 11 kills for Washburn, while Dani McHenry and Wendy Kobbeman had 17 digs apiece. Mandi Cox had five blocks and Julie Sackman had 29 assists. Truman owned a .243 to .172 hitting advantage and had 90 digs compared to 63 for Washburn.
Graham led Truman with 18 kills, while Shearman had 17 kills and 26 digs. Micaela Walter had 14 kills in 25 attempts for the Bulldogs.
Washburn fell to 21-4 and 8-3 in the MIAA, while Truman improved to 25-0 and 8-3 in the MIAA. The Lady Blues host Missouri Southern 7 p.m. in Lee Arena.
