Herron passes 200 wins as Lady Blues improve to 7-0

DENVER – The Lady Blues had a pair of 3-1 wins Friday as they went 2-0 in the first day of the Colorado Premier Challenge. Washburn head coach Chris Herron earned his 200th win with an opening victory over No. 20 Abilene Christian and then he passed that mark as the seventh-ranked Lady Blues (7-0) defeated co-host Metro State in the evening match.

The Lady Blues will play 11th-ranked Florida Southern Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Central and with a win they would play in the 8:30 p.m. championship match. A loss would put them in the 5:30 p.m. third-place match.

In the opening match junior All-American Monica Miesner had 16 kills in her first start of the year as the seventh-ranked Lady Blues won 30-14, 30-21, 23-30, 30-26. Miesner had a .343 attack percentage and she added 15 digs for a double-double. Junior middle hitter Mandi Cox also slammed down 16 kills and hit .500 with six blocks. Junior libero Erica Cowhick had 17 digs and freshman setter Kate Hampson had 36 assists.

In the second match the Lady Blues defeated MSCD 30-25, 19-30, 30-21, 30-20. Junior rightside hitter Tessa Jones led the way with 13 kills and sophomore Bobi Riley had 12. Cowhick had 22 digs and Miesner had 16.

Herron is now 201-54 in six years all-time and 126-25 in five seasons at Washburn. He earned his first 75 wins in three years at Benedictine.
