Lady Blues suffer rare pair of sweeps

DENVER – Washburn falied to win a game in the second day of the Colorado Premier Challenge as the No. 7 Lady Blues fell to No. 11 Florida Southern 30-24, 30-25, 30-24 in the morning match and then lost to fourth-ranked Concordia St. Paul in the third-place contest by scores of 30-23, 30-16, 30-21.
Tessa Jones was the only Lady Blue with a double-digit kill match with 13 against Florida Southern. Monica Miesner had 23 digs and Erica Cowhick added 22 in that match. Washburn hit just .117 as a team and had three total blocks.
Against Concordia WU hit .014 as a team as the Golden Bears blocked 17 of the Lady Blues’ attempts. Cowhick had 11 digs.
Washburn (7-2) has not lost consecutive sweeps since the 2001 season.
The Lady Blues will welcome Fort Hays State into the MIAA with a 7 p.m. match Wednesday on the road.
