Injury-limited Lady Blues cruise to win at FHSU

HAYS– Playing without their two All-Americans, the Lady Blues swept Fort Hays State 30-22, 30-23, 30-19 Wednesday evening in their conference opener and FHSU's first MIAA contest. Sophomore outside hitter Bobi Riley led the No. 9 Lady Blues with 11 kills and freshman outside hitter Ashley Shepard added 10 for her first double-digit kill match.
Washburn (8-2, 1-0 MIAA) hit .178 as a team but kept the Tigers to .041 hitting. Shepard led the team with a .308 attack percentage. Sophomore libero Stephanie Holub led with 20 digs and setters sophomore Carolyn Raynes and freshman Kate Hampson each had 20 assists.
The Lady Blues will host the 11-team Lady Blues Classic Friday and Saturday at Lee Arena and Whiting Fieldhouse. The tournament will feature five teams in the AVCA top-25. Washburn's first match will be Friday at 11 a.m. against South Dakota. WU then takes on Minnesota State at 3 p.m. Saturday's matches put the Lady Blues against ranked teams as they host 13th-ranked North Alabama at 1 p.m. and then No. 13 Nebraska-Omaha at 5 p.m.
