Washburn sweeps through opening day of Lady Blues Classic

Sophomore outside hitter Bobi Riley had a pair of double-digit kill matches as the Lady Blues swept South Dakota and Minnesota State in the first day of the Washburn Lady Blues Classic. No. 9 WU (10-2) will host No. 13 North Alabama Saturday at 1 p.m. and then No. 12 Nebraska-Omaha at 5 p.m.
Riley had 10 kills against USD and the Lady Blues defeated the Coyotes 30-22, 30-16, 30-15. Sophomore middle hitter Stephanie Nitz had seven kills with a .357 attack percentage. Junior libero Erica Cowhick had 16 digs and sophomore setter Carolyn Raynes had 11 with 28 assists.
In the second match the Lady Blues were out hit as they defeated the Mavericks in three close games, 30-25, 32-30, 30-28. Junior outside hitter Bailey Saal led the way with 15 kills and Riley and freshman outside hitter Ashley Shepard added 10 each. Shepard hit .400 with two errors in 20 attempts. Cowhick once again led with 19 digs and Raynes had a season-high 50 assists.
