Lady Blues come up short at No. 11 Central Missouri

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Washburn dropped its second conference match of the year as No. 11 Central Missouri topped the 10th-ranked Lady Blues 3-1 (30-28, 30-21, 28-30, 30-23) in MIAA action Wednesday night. Washburn fell to 17-4 and 5-2 in the MIAA as it lost its first true road game of the year. The Lady Blues will return home for a 2 p.m. match against Southwest Baptist on Saturday.

Junior rightside hitter Tessa Jones had 17 kills and hit .286 but was the only Lady Blue to reach double figures in kills. As a team, Washburn hit .134 and allowed UCM to hit .214 as a team. The Jennies out blocked WU 8-5 and had a 70-48 advantage on kills.

Freshman setter Kate Hampson had 36 assists and sophomore Carolyn Raynes had seven. Raynes moved to 10th all-time at Washburn with 754 career assists. Junior libero Erica Cowhick had 25 digs and sophomore outside hitter Bobi Riley had 14.

Down 28-25 late in the third game, Riley got a kill to make it 28-26 and then she served the next four points as the Lady Blues came back for the win. The Lady Blues got a service ace from Riley, two UCM attack errors and a kill from freshman outside hitter Ashley Shepard as she finished off the comeback.

The Jennies took away Washburn’s momentum in the next game as they built a quick 6-2 lead. The Lady Blues tied it a 8-8 but UCM scored three straight points and kept the lead the rest of the way to win the clinching game.
