Lady Blues take care of Southwest Baptist in three games

The Lady Blues hit .296, their highest attack percentage in 17 matches, as they swept Southwest Baptist 30-18, 30-26, 30-16 in MIAA action Saturday afternoon. No. 10 Washburn improved to 18-4 and 6-2 in the MIAA with the victory. The Lady Blues will host Fort Hays State Wednesday at 7 p.m. as they continue conference action.
Junior rightside hitter Tessa Jones led WU with 16 kills and junior middle hitter Mandi Cox had a .414 attack percetage to lead the team. Freshman outside hitter Ashley Shepard had 13 kills. On defense the Lady Blues were led by junior libero Erica Cowhick with 34 digs and 11 by junior outside hitter Bailey Saal. The Lady Blues split the setter duties between freshman Kate Hampson and sophomore Carolyn Raynes. Hampson led WU with 32 and Raynes added 17.
The Bearcats came back from their Game 1 loss to take an early 7-2 lead against the Lady Blues. The Lady Blues then went on an 8-3 run with three kills from Cox and then a kill from Raynes to tie the game at 10-10. The points went back and forth from then on as there were nine ties and two lead changes in the game. The Lady Blues got to game point at 29-23 but then game up three straight points from SBU before finally putting the Bearcats away.
In the final game the Lady Blues hit .318 and kept SBU to .085 hitting as they ran away with the victory for their 15th straight win over the Bearcats.
