Lady Blues roll past Missouri Western State on Senior Day

Freshman outside hitter Ashley Shepard blasted 17 kills and the Lady Blues kept the Griffons to .070 hitting as they defeated Missouri Western State 3-0 (30-15, 30-21, 30-27) in the final match of the regular season. No. 18 Washburn improved to 25-7 in the non-conference match and will now move into the postseason as it hosts Northwest Missouri State Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the MIAA tournament. If the Lady Blues win Tuesday they will host two semifinal matches Friday and the championship Saturday.

Senior Valerie Peterson and junior Bailey Saal were honored before the match during Senior Day ceremonies. Saal, a senior academically, had seven kills, 18 digs and two blocks in the match. Peterson had nine digs and a service ace.

Junior middle hitter Mandi Cox had 11 kills and hit .429 (two errors in 21 attempts). She also led the team with three blocks. Freshman setter Kate Hampson led WU with 44 assists and nearly had a double-double with nine digs. Junior Erica Cowhick led the Lady Blue defense with 25 digs.

MWSU, which took Washburn to five games earlier in the year, hit under .100 in each game. Each team had six blocks and six service aces in the match. The Lady Blues hit .241 as a team.
