Lady Blues open with three wins in St. Ambrose tourney

The Washburn Lady Blues opened its 2000 campaign with three wins in a two-day event in Davenport, Iowa at the St. Ambrose University tourney.

The Lady Blues opened the season with a 9-15, 15-7, 15-9, 15-12 win over Illinois-Springfield. Becky Hanish led the Washburn attack with 16 kills and Lindsey Kersting dished out a then new career high with 43 assists.

In the second match on Friday, the Lady Blues fell to Olivet Nazarene 15-6, 12-15,
15-17, 5-15. Hanish had 18 kills and Kersting produced a new career high of 45 assists.

On Saturday, the Lady Blues swept through the competition beating Clarke (Iowa) 15-4, 15-0, 15-5 and College of the Ozarks 15-11, 15-8, 15-5.

In the first match Jill Gassen led the Lady Blues with 12 kills. In the second match, Gassen and Jennifer Domzalski each recorded 13 kills.

Following the tournament, Jill Gassen was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Lady Blues open the 2000 MIAA season with Missouri Western at 7 p.m. on Wed. Sept. 6 in Lee Arena.
