Oct. 18, 2000 The Washburn Lady Blues were victorious for the first time in seven
tries against Emporia State in a 3-2 (15-12, 13-15, 15-13, 8-15, 15-8)
triumph in Lee Arena Wednesday night. The Lady Blues opened up a 13-1 lead in the opening game of the match,
before the Hornets pulled within one at 13-12. Washburn rallied to take
the opening game, which proved to be crucial. After the two squads traded 15-13 game victories, the Lady Blues hoped
to put the match away in the fourth game. Emporia State stepped up their
offense and forced a rally game. After the Hornets took an early 5-4 lead in the game, Washburn errupted.
The Lady Blues scored 10 of the next 14 points to cap the victory and
end a season-long three-match skid. Becky Hanish led the way for Washburn with 19 kills, while Jill Gassen
added 17. Crystal Walker tallied nine blocks, including three solos
in the victory. Washburn now stands in fourth place in the MIAA with
a 6-5 record in conference play and 20-9 overall record. The victory
also secured Washburn's first 20-victory season since 1990. Next up for Washburn is a noon match on Saturday in Lee Arena against Rockhurst University. The Lady Blues have not beaten Rockhurst since 1988 and own a 1-20 record against the Lady Hawks all-time. |
