Volleyball LogoLady Blues stay unbeated with wins at FHSU Tournament

HAYS, Kan.Ñ The Washburn volleyball team won their opening match 30-14, 30-12, 30-24 over Colorado-Colorado Springs and followed with a 30-22, 30-22, 23-30, 26-30, 15-11 over Southern Colorado in the Fort Hays State Tournament Friday afternoon.

With the victories, Washburn opened the season with its first 7-0 record in team history under first year coach Chris Herron.

After falling behind 5-0 in the opening game of the first match, Washburn rallied for a 30-14 victory. The Lady Blues improved their hitting as the match went on and sailed to a three-game victory.

Dani McHenry led the charge for the Lady Blues with 10 kills and 10 digs. Wendy Kobbeman added 10 digs and five aces in the match.

McHenry led the way again in the second match, blasting 19 kills and getting 21 digs. Lindsey Kersting had 55 assists, 17 digs and 6 blocks. Kobbeman added 18 digs, while Alecia Barron had 16 digs.

The Lady Blues finished with with season-highs of 66 kills, 99 digs and 19 blocks against the Thunderwolves.

The Lady Blues conclude the tournament Saturday, playing Fort Hays State at 12:30 p.m. and Friends at 5:30 p.m.
