TOPEKA Ñ The Washburn volleyball topped Newman University 30-21, 30-20, 30-28 it their home opener in Lee Arena Tuesday night. Dani McHenry came out with five kills in six attempts in the first game, while Susan Crooks added five more assists to lead the Lady Blues early. The Lady Blues hit .386 in the first game as a team. Washburn went up early and never looked back in the second game, but surrendered several leads on sloppy play in the third game. McHenry and Ann Weygint each had two kills late in the match to secure the win. McHenry and Mary Fisher each tallied 12 kills, while Crooks finished with 11. Lindsey Kersting had 39 assists and 16 digs, while libero Alecia Barron led Washburn defensively with 18 digs. Wendy Kobbeman added 12 digs. The Lady Blues are back in action 10 a.m. against Colorado-Springs Friday morning in the Fort Hays State Tournament. The Lady Blues play four matches in the FHSU Tournament, before returning home for their MIAA opener 7 p.m. Sept. 10 against arch-rival Emporia State. BOX SCORE Washburn def.
