The Lady Blues dropped a heartbreaker in their season home opener against NAIA powerhouse Hastings (Neb.) College in five games 10-15, 11-15, 15-5, 13-15, 16-18,
Leading the Lady Blues' attack was sophomore Jill Gassen who recorded 17 kills in 37 attack attempts.
Washburn rallied from a 0-2 deficit to push the Broncos into the fifth game. The Lady Blues had a chance to win the match at 15-14, but the Lady Blues dropped four of the next five points to fall 18-16.
Washburn will be in action Sept. 8 as they open the MIAA season at Missouri Western in St. Jospeh, Mo.
