TOPEKA - The No. 13 Washburn Lady Blues topped NAIA No. 6 Evangel 74-50 in Lee Arena in their season opener Saturday night.

Washburn was led by Montoya Whitfield, who netted a team-high 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Washburn trailed 14-12 early in the game, before Whitfield's back-to-back baskets on a layup and 3-pointer made it 32-21 with 4:00 left in the opening half. She finished the opening half with nine points.

Washburn extendeda 34-29 halftime lead to 43-29 on April Roadhouse's layup four minutes into the second half. Evangel couldn't get within 11 the rest of the way, as Washburn won its fourth straight opener under Ron McHenry.

Carla Sintra and Brooke Ubelaker, both making Washburn debuts, had 10 pionts apiece. Sintra had a team-high nine rebounds. Washburn had a decisive 47-24 rebounding edge.
