TOPEKA - The No. 9 Washburn Lady Blues topped Missouri Southern 59-47 in Lee Arena Saturday night. With the win, Washburn improved to 15-2 and 6-2 in the MIAA, while Southern fell to 11-6 and 2-6 in the MIAA.

With the score tied at 8, Washburn used a 7-0 run to take a 15-8 lead with 6:54 left in the opening half. Juwanna Rivers' 3-point play with three seconds left gave the Lady Blues a 31-22 lead at the break. Both teams struggled and made just 9 of 26 (34.6%) from the field.

The Lions got within 39-32 on Wyketha Harrell's basket early in the second half but couldn't get any closer the rest of the way.

Rivers led the way with a career-high 15 points on 5 of 7 field goals (3 of 5 3-pointers) and four assists. Lora Westling had 12 points and eight rebounds.

Washburn is back in action 5:30 p.m. Wednesday night at Pittsburg State's John Lance Arena.
