Rivers named MIAA Player of the Week

Juwanna Rivers, a 5-7 junior from Cleveland, Ohio, scored 10 of her career-high 28 points in the two overtime periods, hitting key shots down the stretch as No. 13 Washburn won at Truman, 97-94, Saturday. Her efforts helped Rivers share Wilson/MIAA Player of the Week honors for the past week.
She had 18 points in regulation (nine in each half), including the three-point play which tied the game with 15 seconds left in regulation. Rivers also hit the bucket with 28 seconds left to send the game into the second overtime, and WU's last four points of the second extra session. Her rebound on the Bulldogs' tying three-point try sealed the win. She also added four rebounds, three assists and two steals vs. Truman.
In the Lady Blues' 82-59 win over Southwest Baptist Wednesday, Rivers dished out a career high eight assists in 15 minutes of action, scoring two points.
For the week, she averaged 15.0 points and 5.5 assists, making 9-of-16 from the field (1-of-4 from the arc) and 11-of-15 at the foul line.
Rivers transferred to WU from Tyler (Texas) Junior College and is a 2001
graduate of East Technical High School in Cleveland, Ohio. She shared this week’s award with Missouri Western’s Eldra Paixao, who averaged 19 points, seven assists and 3.5 steals.
