Washburn defense leads way to road victory

BOLIVAR, Mo. - The No. 9 Washburn Lady Blues used a stellar defensive performance to beat Southwest Baptist 63-41 at Davison Fieldhouse Tuesday night.
Washburn held Southwest Baptist to 41 points by surrendering only 15 field goals in 41 attempts. The 41 points were the least by the Lady blues against MIAA opponent since Washburn topped Lincoln 89-38 Feb. 14, 1990 in Lee Arena. The points were also the least by the Lady Bearcats in the all-time series against Washburn.
Washburn led 17-16 in the opening half before going on a 13-2 run that was capped by Lora Westling's jumper with 53 seconds left. Amber Wheeler's jumper in the final seconds pulled SBU within 30-20 at the break.
Brooke Ubelaker scored nine of Washburn's first 12 points in the second half to cap a 12-2 run and increase the lead to 42-22 with 15:35 left. SBU didn't get within 16 the rest of the way.
Westling led Washburn with 15 points, including 11 in the first half. Brooke Ubelaker added 11 points and seven rebounds, while Carla Sintra had eight points and nine rebounds.
Washburn won its sixth straight over Southwest Baptist and third straight at Davison Fieldhouse to improve to 14-2 and 5-2 in the MIAA. Southwest Baptist fell to 11-5 and 3-4 in the MIAA.
Washburn is back in action 5:30 p.m. Saturday night against Missouri Southern in Lee Arena.
