Blues put up tough fight against KU in final exhibition

The Lady Blues put up a tough fight, but fell to the
Kansas Jayhawks in Allen Fieldhouse 72-46 in their final exhibition
game of the season.
After committing seven turnovers in the first 4-plus minutes
of the game, the Lady Blues settled down cutting into the 14-4 run KU
had built. As the first half continued, Washburn would cut into the
Jayhawks lead slicing the margin to as little as six with 4:08 left
at 29-23.
In the second half, the Lady Blues couldn't get the offense
going as they missed 14 of their first 15 field goal attempts of the
second half as the Jayhawks turned a 12-point halftime advantage into
a 21-point advantage opening the second half with a 19-4 run en route
to a 72-46 final score.
Senior Jennifer Butcher lead the Lady Blues with a game-high
16 points. She also had a team-high seven rebounds. The Jayhawks shot
62 percent in the second half (18-29) while holding Washburn to 9 of
29 shooting (31 percent). The Lady Blues did cause 21 KU turnovers and
held their own against a taller KU line up gaining 34 rebounds to the
Jayhawks' 38.
The Lady Blues will be back in action on Dec. 16 as they
take on William Jewell College in a 7 p.m. tip. After that, Washburn
will finish its non-conference slate with Missouri-St. Louis on Dec.
30 at 5:30 p.m. before starting the MIAA season with Missouri Southern
in Joplin on Jan. 3.
