TOPEKA - The Washburn Lady Blues fell behind early and never caught
up in their 60-56 loss to Missouri Western in Lee Arena Wednesday night.
The loss snapped Washburn's 19-game home court winning streak and gave
the Griffons their 11th straight win in the series.
With the loss Washburn (16-2, 7-2 MIAA) fell one game
behind Emporia State (15-3, 8-1 MIAA) in the MIAA standings. Emporia
State topped Northwest Missouri State 85-69 Wednesday night.
The Griffons took an early 8-0 lead three minutes into
the game when Carly Lee canned her second 3-pointer of the game. Lee
and Steph Jones each scored 11 points to help Western to a 41-28 halftime
lead.
The Lady Blues closed the gap within 50-47 on Crystal
Walker's two made free throws with 7:49 left. Walker added eight of
Washburn's final 11 points and made it 58-56 with a baseline jumper
with 1:01 left.
The Lady Blues got the ball back with 20 seconds left
and had a chance to take the lead on Kristy Chapman's 3-point attempt
that rimmed out.
The Lady Blues will now begin a three-game road swing
with a 1:30 p.m. tilt against Truman State Saturday afternoon in Kirksville,
Mo.
