PITTSBURG, KAN - After losing for the first time Wednesday, the No.
4 Washburn Lady Blues responded with a 75-68 win over in-state rival
Pittsburg State Saturday night. The win improved Washburn's record to
16-1 and 7-1 in MIAA play. The Lady Blues are tied for first in the
conference with Emporia State (14-3, 7-1 MIAA).
Washburn trailed by as many as seven points in the first
half, before going on a 26-6 run to take a 36-23 lead on Crystal Walker's
layup with 2:47 to go in the opening half. Kristy Chapman helped start
the run by canning four first half 3-pointers to finish with a team-high
12 points in the opening half.
The Gorillas try to make a comeback and tied the game
twice but could never gain the lead in the second half. The Lady Blues
sealed the victory by hitting six straight free throws in the final
39 seconds.
Carissa Goeglein led Washburn with 20 points (10 in each
half), while Walker and Chapman finished with 17 apiece. Walker went
8 of 12 from the field and recorded her 13th career double-double with
13 rebounds.
The Lady Blues will now face defending MIAA champion Missouri
Western Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. om Lee Arena. Washburn lost three meetings
with the Griffons last season, including a 54-51 win in the MIAA Tournament
championship in St. Joseph, Mo.
