TOPEKA The No. 12 Washburn Lady Blues shook off a dismal
shooting start to win 71-58 over in-state rival Pittsburg State in Lee
Arena Saturday night. With the win Washburn improved to 22-3 and 13-3
in the MIAA and stayed tied with Emporia State for the MIAA lead.
The Lady Blues made just two of their first 12 shots in
the opening half, before knocking in 13 of their last 17 in the half
to surge to a 39-24 lead. Alison Garrett paced the Lady Blues by hitting
three of her four 3-point shots for nine points. Garrett hit a 3-pointer
with two seconds left in the opening half.
The Gorillas pulled within 41-33 on Amanda Davied's jumper
with 16:47 left to cap a 9-2 run. The Lady Blues extended the lead to
54-37 with 9:28 on Kristy Chapman's two free throws. Chapman finished
with a season high 19 points to lead the Lady Blues by hitting all six
of her field goals and five of six free throws.
Crystal Walker scored 18 points and grabbed five rebounds,
while Carissa Goeglein added 13 points.
The Lady Blues travel to St. Joseph, Mo. 5:30 Wednesday
to take on Missouri Western. The Griffons (19-5, 12-4) are a game back
of Washburn and Emporia State in the standings.
