Blues dominant in 79-42 victory over Missouri-Rolla

TOPEKA The No. 7 Washburn Lady Blues were dominant on both ends
of the floor in their 79-42 win over Missouri-Rolla in Lee Arena Saturday
afternoon.
UMR's 42 points were the fewest by a Washburn opponent
since Jan. 25, 1995, when the Lady Blues topped Emporia State 64-42
in Emporia. 42 points also tied a conference low by Washburn opponents
in an MIAA game (64-42 over ESU in 1995), while Washburn also held Lincoln
to the same mark in a 76-42 victory in Jefferson City, Mo. on Feb. 26,
1992.
The win was also Washburn's largest MIAA win since Feb.
13, 1999, when the Lady Blues won 90-52 at Missouri-Rolla.
Washburn had an early 14-2 run and used another run to
extend the lead late in the first half. Alison Garrett's jumper capped
a 13-0 run to make it 39-16 with 1:26 left in the first half. The Lady
Blues finished with a 44-18 lead at the half.
The Lady Miners couldn' t get within 24 in the second
half, while Washburn had another run of 11-0 and took its biggest lead
at 74-32 with 6:45 left on Dan McHenry's second straight layup.
Crystal Walker led four Lady Blues in double figures with
14 points, while Carissa Goeglein added 11 points and Alison Garrett
and Lora Westling added 10 points apiece. Washburn owned a commanding
37-28 rebounding edge in the game and shot 50.9 percent on 29 of 57
shooting from the field.
Kristy Chapman added nine points on 3 of 6 3-pointers
to help Washburn tied a team record with nine 3-pointers in the game.
She is now just 16 3-pointers shy of breaking Brenda Schaffer-Dahl's
career record for 3s of 110.
Washburn improved to 13-0 and 4-0 in MIAA play with the
win and are in a tie for first with Emporia State (11-2, 4-0 MIAA).
Washburnwon its 18th straight at home, which is tied for the fifth longest
streak in the nation.
The Lady Blues are back in action 5:30 p.m. Wednesday
against Missouri-Rolla at Northwest Missouri State.
