TOPEKA.- The Washburn Lady Blues used a solid defensive effort in a 70-61 victory over arch-rival Emporia State in Lee Arena Wednesday night.

The win was Washburn's first in 10 games against the Lady Hornets, snapping a nine-game losing skid dating back toWashburn's 68-67 victory in Emporia Jan. 29, 1997.

After ESU scored the first basket of the game, Washburn went on a 15-4 run that was capped by Gosia Czarnecka's 3-pointer just six minutes in. Washburn led by as many as 14, before taking a 37-27 halftime lead.

The Lady Hornets pulled within five several times in the second half, but couldn't close the gap as Crystal Walker score 17 of her career-high tying 25 points in the second half. Walker also added a career-high 16 rebounds.

Lindsey Moddelmog netted a season high nine points on 4 of 4 shootings, while Carissa Goeglein scored 11 points.

Washburn is back in action 5:30 Saturday night in Lee Arena against Pittsburg State.
