JOPLIN, MO - The Washburn Lady Blues picked up a big South
Central Region win on the road against the Missouri Southern Lady Lions
73-60. The win moved the Lady Blues to 15-5 and 7-4 in conference play.
With the win, the Lady Blues move into a second place tie with the Lady
Lions, but they would have the tie breaker after beating them in both
meetings.
In the first half the Lady Blues shot 61 percent from
the field hitting 16 of 26 shots including 3 of 5 from behind the arc
holding a 13-11 advantage on the boards taking a 40-34 lead into the
break.
Missouri Southern, keeping pace with the Lady Blues hit
50 percent of its shots hitting 13 of 26 shots - 5 of 8 from 3-point
land.
Neither team led by more than six in the first half with
six lead changes in the first half.
In the second half, the Lady Blues cooled off from the
field hitting 12 of 30 shots, but were 8 of 11 from the free line while
maintaining their two rebound margin. The Lady Lions would take the
lead at 53-52 with 11:09 remaining, but the Lady Blues would go on a
8-0 run over the next 5-plus minutes to put Missouri Southern away.
The Lady Blues were led by Carissa Goeglein who scored
22 points on 9 of 14 shooting. She scored 12 of those in the second
half. Crystal Walker scored 18.
Up next for the Lady Blues is Southwest Baptist University
at 5:30 p.m. in Lee Arena. The last meeting in Bolivar, Washburn handed
